Roma non far
la stupida stasera

Rome, don't be silly tonight

MUSIC

The song is by Armando Trovajoli, an author of musicals based on Rome. Like "Arrivederci Roma", which you will find elsewhere in our site, it is not a touristy song, but a tribute to Rome. Rather than a love declaration to the best half, it is a song of affection for the city of the cities, having such a great personality to the point of being perceived by Romans as a friend, or as a mother. Also this song is one of the many melodies of those unforgettable 50s and 60s in which Rome was by far the most romantic, lively, imaginative and hospitable place on earth - although more chaotic, it still is.

The original lyrics are in Roman dialect, privileging a witty simplicity and a poetic bonhomie:

"Rome, don't be silly tonight,
give me a hand to make her say "yes",
choose among all the stars,
the most twinkling ones,
and a pinch of moon, or I'll be in troubles.

Make her feel it's almost spring,
send the best crickets that will "crick, crick",
put the westerly breeze, the most roguish you have.

Rome, hold the candle (play gooseberry) for me tonight".

The roma...nce never ends, since thousands years!
